Professor Gaël Giraud on the Ukraine War in L’Osservatore Romano

After the Pope’s call for peace in Ukraine on July 3rd, the newspaper L’Osservatore Romano interviewed Gaël Giraud, Director of the Environmental Justice Program, in an article entitled Ukraine war: Jesuit economist invokes negotiations, ‘or it will be total destruction.’ on July 22nd.

In the article, Dr. Giraud pleads for peace negotiations and an end to the fighting. He worries about the total destruction of the country if the war continues and last for months or even years. He also mentions the possibility of linking the war to the ecological crisis, mainly by reducing the EU’s dependence on fossil fuels coming from Russia. He proposes implementing a Marshall Plan for the sustainable reconstruction of Ukraine that European countries should support.
